The Details of Room Darkening Window Shades

Whether you need to darken the bedrooms of your Fort Myers home with room darkening window blinds, or you want to block the intense Florida sunshine coming in your windows, we have high performance fabrics and operating systems to make it easy.

  • LightLock frames the room darkening shade in the window, sealing out the light. The only time you have light entering is when you open the shades.
  • Dual Shades feature a secondary blackout roller shade that operates independently of the front shade. You can enjoy light filtering and views–then lower the blackout shade into place when you need it.
  • Automatic Blinds instantly lower into place when you need it dark. They can also be scheduled to open and close, based on your schedule.

Sleep in on Saturday, or take a midday nap on Sunday. Room darkening blinds work great in media spaces, or anywhere the intensity of the sun gets to be too much at certain times of day. We have an extensive collection of fabrics to create room darkening drapery, and we can guide you to the best fabric liners for blackout curtains in your Florida home. Stop into our local store in Fort Myers to see the difference between light filtering and room darkening fabrics.

Do You Need Room Darkening or Blackout?

While you may not realize it, there IS a difference between room darkening shades and blackout shades. It’s the details that matter. Room darkening blinds are described as when “most” of the light is removed from the room, while blackout blinds make it hard to see in front of you. The fabrics you choose can affect this, the type of window blinds you select, as well as the way the room darkening window coverings are mounted on your windows. This is one of the reasons we recommend sitting down with a professional. They can sit down with you to explain which type of window coverings will be best for your home, what challenges you may face and how the fabrics will interact with–or stop–the light.

Light Gaps Can Let Light In…

Side light gaps can be an issue that interferes, even when you have room darkening blinds. The edges of the window shades can have a “halo” of light glowing through–this is what is known as a light gap. The reason this happens can be due to the type of window blinds you’ve chosen–how tight of a fit is allowed. It can also be the result of the kind of mounting process. Inside mount will normally have a better result than outside mount, depending on your windows. Two ways to combat light gaps? Blackout curtains placed at the sides of the window can block light. The LightLock system of blackout shades installs a U-channel into the frame, sealing out the outside light.

Light Filtering AND Room Darkening with Dual Shades

The dual shades feature has quickly become a favorite in the world of room darkening blinds and shades. The reason? It allows products, like silhouette shades and solar shades, to finally offer a room darkening option. It’s increases the range of light control from light filtering to blackout–which is pretty incredible. You can enjoy soft natural light during the day, through the front shade. Then, when you want darkness, you lower the secondary blackout roller shade down. It’s custom darkness delivered!
