Bedroom Design: 5 Tips to Get You Started

It should be a “dreamy” space–pun intended. But, for some, it can seem like a nightmare. Has your dream bedroom design been put on the back burner until…? The time is now. The At Home Blinds & Decor team has 5 tips to get a makeover going in the right direction, and you’ll see just how much of an impact it can have on your life.

1. Keep It Simple

The bedroom is a simple space–and it’s very important not to complicate matters. Try to keep unnecessary items and furniture from taking up residence here. Clutter tends to skyrocket anxiety, and the last thing you’ll want is to make this room anything but a sanctuary. There are times when we know clients like to use their bedroom for a “work from home” space, or they’ve created an area for working out. But, beyond intentional function, if it doesn’t belong, keep it simple and put it away.

2. Design the Movement

Moving around your bedroom shouldn’t be difficult. In fact, it should be the easiest room to move around in because of its simplicity. Keep walkways open and clear–you should have pathways to move to the closet, to the dressers, to the en suite bathroom. That means placing the bed away from the door, as it is the biggest item in the room.

3. Customize the Windows

You’ll be grateful for the sunshine that comes into your bedroom–but not too early. Your bedroom windows need both light control and privacy to achieve the ideal sleeping environment. Because you know yourself–and your home–the best, you’ll also know if room darkening or blackout shades are necessary.

If you’re a creature of habit–let’s face it, most of us are–you’ll really love the idea of smart shades. You can schedule your room darkening shades to adjust at certain times of day. They’ll stay closed until the time you set to wake up, and then they’ll stay open until that mid-morning Florida sunshine makes it just too warm to have the sunlight flooding in. Then, they’ll close up, keeping the temperature cool for you.

4. Prepare Levels of Light

The bedroom is obviously a space for sleeping, but there’s more to it than that. It could be your favorite place to read a good book, binge watch your favorite series, or enjoy phone calls with long distance friends. Because these activities can happen throughout the morning, afternoon, evening or night, one of the most important things you can do is to add levels of lighting for individual activities. A floor lamp next to a chair, a wall sconce above your bed, a beautiful chandelier that illuminates the room from the ceiling–all these examples can exist in the same room, allowing you to tailor the atmosphere.

5. Style It Up!

This is a big one, and we’ve saved the best for last. Your bedroom design deserves to be a style moment! It’s time to stop ignoring this space and revitalize it. Maybe you’ve seen a feature wall created as a wow factor as you enter the room. Have you found yourself swooning over new bedding that caught your eye? Do the walls deserve a fresh coat of paint in a brand new color scheme? Is an area rug the element that could take the style to the next level? This space will lift your mood and offer you the calm and serenity you need to recharge yourself.
